What gets you out of bed?

A good shower gets me out of bed. And thats difficult because I recently discovered the comforts of an electric blanket. Another good reason to get out of bed is a trip to the fabric markets in shum shui po. Finding the right notions for costumes is a fun scavenger hunt.

What keep you awake at night?

Neverending Instagram Stories. Sometimes I watch other burlesque content creators in the US and get caught up with what they’re up to and how they’re engaging with their audience. It’s a new world of burlesquers out there. At the moment I’m in love with Ginger Valentine.

How does your community influence your work?

A positive and fun-loving community. We should be celebrating all body types and be able to laugh at ourselves. Life isn’t perfect but we should be able to laugh and feel good.

Does your art say something about you?

I think art for me as a medium of expression and exploration. We should be able to feel comfortable in our skin.

What does your art mean to you?

Art can be anything. I always found art relaxing. I go through phases of creative interests. Ukulele, Video editing, Costume design.. etc. Lately I’ve been experimenting with guoache paints.

What tools do you use to create? Listening to other people’s playlists. I like to curating sounds that I like for future projects. Tacky glue and rhinestones are always fantastic on costumes.

Working on a creative project

What keep you awake at night?

Same as everyone else – I’M A TALENTLESS HACK WHO’S WASTED MY LIFE

How does your community influence your work?

The prospect of performing a new song to supportive friends here in HK is extremely motivating

Does your art say something about you?

JUNK! is absolutely a mashup of all my favorite things – music, comedy, videogames, women, technology and visual arts

What does your art mean to you?

Creative expression is a bodily function that improves with use. I prioritize it highly.

What tools do you use to create?

All of my creations are made hunched behind a computer screen. I use videogame controllers and VR gear to make music with non-traditional gear

What gets you out of bed?

CATS! I watch cat videos on YouTube for living.

Other than caffeine and monsters under my bed, maybe when my iPad is out of battery? I do most things digitally nowadays.

How does your community influence your work?

Growing up in Hong Kong, I read a lot of manga and watched a lot of anime as a kid, thus my earlier work was heavily influenced by Japanese pop culture.

Does your art say something about you?

Whimsical, colorful and realistic. Also very geeky.

What does your art mean to you?

A more obscure way to express myself.

What tools do you use to create?

Apple Pencil, iPad, Procreate, Adobe suite, laptop, paintbrush, canvas, acrylic or oil paint. Also pen and paper.

Good Girl

How does your community influence your work?

Truthfully I have never felt that way about the place I live in currently. Even though it’s been my home for almost 20 years. I spent a lot of time creating based on dreams rather than what was around me. As time passed and I became a part of the communities around me, I started to open my eyes to all the different dreams of others. I wish I started doing that earlier.

Does your art say something about you?

The meaning of what is good is so subjective, just like everyone’s own true definition of what is bad…

Born into a strict Asian household, I’ve always had a preset definition of good and bad. Now, my drawings reflect what I believe it is to be a good girl. Never letting go of that deep down desire to be traditionally good, I’ve also found a way to channel the bad.

GOODGIRL portrays what I think is good. What feels good, tastes good, looks good… What does it mean to you?

What does your art mean to you?

I haven’t really thought about that.. Right now, making the art and the process of creation is what means a lot to me. I’m still learning and will always be a student. And every time I finish a piece I’ve learned something new. I love that.

What tools do you use to create?

My digital illustrations are done on the iPad. When I paint I use acrylics.

What gets you out of bed?

Getting out of bed is hard as I love dreaming. I love that space between sleep and awake. The space just before you wake up. The space when you having a massage. The space floating in a bath in the dark.

What keep you awake at night?

My to do list. It never ends. I have so many projects on at the same time. Planning, making jewelry, creating lectures for my event classes.

How does your community influence your work?

I find inspiration in interesting people. I love deep conversations about random topics. Last week I met a man who was promoting the idea of living funerals, have your funeral before you die. Another guy who was bringing in shamen to do ayahuasca ceremonies, and another man that was a master shibarai artist having studied many years in Japan. I am not sure how I find these people but they keep my mind active and excited.

Does your art say something about you?

I create experiences. I want people to feel. Maybe because I don’t think I feel enough.

What does your art mean to you?

Sometimes nothing, other times it is all. Usually it is a process I enjoy.

What tools do you use to create?

Mostly people.
